Choosing and coordinating outfits is probably going to be the most stressful part of your session (it always is for me!).  These are some suggestions to get you going, but the most important thing is to be comfortable in what you're wearing.  We want these photos to reflect you, your relationship AND your style!

Styling Your Session

For a more editorial look, bring a little something extra.  A picnic basket, champagne or wine, or fresh flowers attached to balloons, a car bumper, or in a basket can bring that "wow" factor and it's a great way to personalize your session.  Whether you want to incorporate an activity like cooking or shopping, or larger props like cars and bikes or smaller ones like blankets and hats, even planning for just one styled item could be a fun way to make your session more unique.

Dress it up

There's not enough occasions to rock a romantic gown or a flower crown, am I right?  This is your chance to do it up!  Rent the Runway is a great option if you're not looking to add a permanent piece to your collection and it's an affordable way to feel like a million bucks!  Long flowing dresses like the one below look amazing on camera because they add movement to the photos.  And shoes can make or break an outfit.  Stilettos, especially open toed heels elongate a woman's legs.  Of course bare feet is always cute when the location is right!

Bring an Outfit Change for Added Variety

It's a great idea to have two different looks; one casual and one more formal (or trendy and classic, etc.).  If it's too stressful to think about two outfits, consider bringing an extra layer and/or a change of shoes.  A blazer and with jeans and heels can go from casual to trendy real quick!  Again it adds some variety, and layers and textures add visual interest (think of all the clothing ads you see in commercials and in print).

Choosing Colors

When choosing colors for your outfits there's a few things to consider.  What will you be doing with the photos, where will you display them?  And where is the session taking place?  Softer, neutral colors are pretty timeless and go with any home decor so you can't go wrong with cream, tan, gray, and pastels (these colors also work great for the beach).  Patterns and black are ok, too!  Just stay away from logos which can be distracting (unless it's vintage and goes with the theme of your session).  Ultra bright colors tend to distract the eye as well, and can cast funky colors onto your faces so definitely stay away lime green and hot pink!

Flattering your Features

If you are self conscious about a certain area of your body, it's important to recognize that in advance.  Choosing flattering silhouettes and colors that compliment your natural features is the best way to ensure you'll love the way you look in photos!  For example, three-quarter and longer sleeve lengths have a slimming effect on arms or you could bring a cute jacket or cardigan, too.  Heels elongate women's legs, and if you decide on an open toe shoe, don't forget to get your toes done!  Speaking of which, a manicure is also a good idea since we will likely photograph your hands to show off that new bling!

Adding an accessory or two can really help tie in the color palette (or add a pop of color!), as well as add that finishing touch.  Big statement necklaces, belts, bracelets, earrings, jackets, hats and scarves all help add visual interest.  A fresh flower crown can also be a romantic touch!  Think in layers and textures!

Hair and Makeup

You want to look and feel your best for photos, so why not go pro with hair and makeup?  A good makeup artist knows how to get it right for the camera and really compliment your features.  Think about scheduling your session on the day of your trial!

For Him

Long, fitted pants and closed-toed shoes are the most sophisticated and masculine looks for men.  Of course something casual and barefoot works best on the beach and keep lighter colors in mind; cream, white, light blue, gray, etc.  Solid shades of gray and navy tend to compliment most women's outfits.  Think about his details, too.  A belt, watch, colored socks, pocket square.. you can use any of these things to complete the look.

You can also think about personalizing some photos just for him!  Team jerseys or stopping at your favorite bar might get him a little more excited about taking pictures, if he's not already ;)

Have any pets?

Bring them!  This is a great time to grab some photos with your pet, especially if they can't be at the wedding!  It's best to bring someone else along as well, that way when we are done photographing with them, someone is there to take them home (or for a walk :).  Don't forget the lint roller! ;)

  • Don't try to match.  Coordinate.
  • Accessorize.
  • Bring a lint brush, treats, and a pet-sitter if you're bringing your pet.
  • Empty your pockets.  Phones and keys will show in the photos!
  • Bring an outfit change.
  • Clean the ring and get a manicure.
  • Be on time.
  • Relax!  This is going to be fun!
